Maloney's Barber Shop supports DGR Auckland 2017
What’s the worst thing about riding a motorbike? Insects in your throat …. soaking wet pants …. aching muscles? Nah, it’s got to be Helmet Hair! You arrive at your destination, dapper and ready to enjoy a cold beer and some live rock n roll, but your hair’s plastered to your head in a bath of sweat and bad partings. That’s what gave Auckland Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) organisers Mike Andrews, and Julian Maloney of Maloney's Barber Shop, the idea to set up at the ride’s after-party to sort out those messy mops.
DGR 2017 saw 92,000 riders in 580 cities take part in this global gathering of vintage and classic motorbikes. Raising funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and male suicide prevention, on behalf of charity partner The Movember Foundation. September 24th was a beauty in the City of Sails, after 2016’s deluge which was more like swimming than riding.
Maloney's Barber Shop has been involved with the DGR for four years now, with Julian a sponsored rider for Deus Clothing in 2014, then Moto Guzzi in 2015. Now the proud owner of a Moto Guzzi V9 Bobber, Julian and his wife Susannah were stoked when Mike (also a long term client and mate) invited them to be involved this year. They set up a pop-up barber shop to style gents’ hair using Uppercut Deluxe products and do the odd cut as well, for donations.
On the day over 500 bikes gathered, from scooters to Harleys, café racers to bobbers. After snaking along Auckland’s beautiful waterfront then along the hip Karangahape and Ponsonby Roads for maximum visual impact, they ended up at Auckland’s newest and best bike shop and servicer, Moto Magnet.
The guys wasted no time jumping off their bikes and diving straight into the Pop-Up Babershop. First cutting and styling the musicians from bands – Durty Murdur and The Recliner Rockers - before their performances, then tending to riders and supporters aged 12 to 72.
As well as Uppercut Deluxe prize packs, there were giveaways from motorbike clothing legends Saint and NZ’s own Earnest, Triumph Motorcycles, Moto Magnet and of course the Movember Foundation. These generous donations helped the Maloney’s pop-up raise over $700 on the day, all while having heaps of fun. It’s not too early to get your bike – and outfit – ready for DGR 2018 ……
