Featured Style: Mohawk with Triggers

The Mohawk-rooted in heritage and rebellion-still stands as a timeless symbol of bold self-expression, redefined today with modern precision and personal style.

The Mohawk is one of the most iconic hairstyles in history. Its origins are linked to the Indigenous Mohawk people of North America, the style has long been associated with strength, identity, and individuality.

Over time, the silhouette made its way into military culture, famously worn by American paratroopers as a symbol of toughness and unity before becoming a defining look of the late ‘70s punk movement. From there, the Mohawk was adopted by goth, hardcore, and skate scenes, cementing itself as a haircut built on rebellion, self-expression, and standing out from the crowd.

Today, the Mohawk continues to evolve. Modern versions balance bold shape with clean execution, texture, and wearability. Less about shock value, more about confidence, personality, and making the style your own.

Here we see Ambassador Evan Marshall’s take on the classic Mohawk with ‘Triggers’ the side burn tuft that was inspired by the Chelsea Girl Cut, which was adapted in the Mohawk in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

Evan knows a thing or two about the Mohawk, having worn one since the age of 17, and cutting them for friends long before he was a barber. His shop Johnny Voodoo’s consistently cuts three to four Mohawks per week.

How to Style a Modern Mohawk at Home

The key to a great Mohawk is height, shape and control. Building a strong foundation is what allows the style to stand tall and hold its profile throughout the day.

Start with freshly washed and thoroughly dried hair. Removing excess oil and product build-up helps reduce weight in the hair, making it easier to create volume and lift where you need it most. Drying the hair thoroughly with a blow dryer will also remove unwanted weight and allow styling products to be more effective.

Apply Uppercut Deluxe Styling Powder directly through the centre section of the hair. Using your fingers to section the hair out and shaking Styling Powder into the roots of the hair working front to back. Work it in with your fingertips, lifting the hair upwards as you go. The Styling Powder creates volume and lift and provides the foundation needed to build the style.

Once you've established the foundation, take a generous scoop of Deluxe Pomade and spread evenly across your palms. Apply the product to the base of the mohawk and spread from roots to tips by lift upwards. Use two hands to apply even pressure to both sides, focusing on the centre profile of the Mohawk. Once the ‘spike’ is established, use an Uppercut Deluxe Vent Brush to lift and define the Mohawk further, using a hand on the opposite side of the brush to keep the style upright.

If required, pinch and lift the top sections of the Mohawk with your fingertips to define the final shape.

Make any final adjustments and you're good to go.
